Best Places to See Autumn Leaves in Niseko

  • By Tsuyuki

Since almost 70% of Japan's land is covered with forests, it's only natural that the country is renowned for its breathtaking autumn foliage. Hokkaido is no exception, and Niseko stands out as one of the best areas in Hokkaido, thanks to its abundant natural beauty. This includes the majestic mt. Yotei, Niseko mountain range, and the surrounding lakes.

Imagine waking up to the view of misty forests glistening with morning dew, enjoying a hearty breakfast at méli mélo -Yuki No Koe-, and then embarking on a quest to discover picturesque scenes around Niseko. It's the perfect way to breathe in fresh air and relax. The best time to view autumn leaves in Niseko is typically from the end of September to end of October. Due to a hotter summer than average, there is a chance that the autumn leaves can be seen later than the average schedule.

Easy Access

Lake Hangetsu, Kutchan

Situated at the base of Mt. Yotei, this lake offers an ideal location for a leisurely stroll amidst the trees. A pleasant 20-minute walk will lead you to a viewpoint where you can admire the lake's half moon shape, and an additional 10-minute walk will take you to the lakeshore. Don't forget to capture the stunning sight of Mt. Yotei rising behind the forest with your camera along the way.

If you're eager to spend a half-day hiking in the mountains, we highly recommend Annupuri for its spectacular views of the Japan Sea and the surrounding area. You can either drive to Goshiki Onsen to start your hike from the rear of the mountain or take a summer gondola ride from the resort base of Annupuri Ski Resort and hike up the rest of the way.
