Known for its resemblance with the famous mountain, Mt. Fuji, Mt. Yotei is undoubtedly a symbol of Niseko. Listed in the Hyakumeizan, or the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, Mt. Yotei is a much-loved landmark that proudly rises above Niseko’s surroundings. Complementing the vast farmlands and pristine nature Niseko and its neighbouring towns possess, Mt. Yotei makes for picture-perfect scenery wherever you go.

Viewpoints

If you are bringing a car on your trip to Niseko, try stopping by some of the scenic viewpoints in the area that gives you a stunning view of Mt. Yotei. Parking is available in these spots so you can definitely stop and take your time taking photos in these areas.

Miyata and Kurokawa Viewpoint

In Niseko Town, there are two viewpoints that are famous for being Mt. Yotei photo spots: the Miyata Viewpoint and the Kurokawa Viewpoint, located along Route 5.

Aikawa Viewpoint

Probably the most popular out of the viewpoints in this list is the Aikawa Viewpoint along Route 276. With a straight road that seems to lead all the way to the foot of Mt. Yotei truly makes it a perfect photo spot.

As it is located along the highway, please be careful of cars passing through.

Koshinyoteizan Viewpoint

Not as well-known compared to others on the list, Koshinyoteizan Viewpoint in Kyogoku still offers an equally beautiful view of the mountain. If you visit on a day with good weather, the contrast of Mt. Yotei, the famous Shiribetsu River against a clear sky provides quite a dreamy atmosphere.

Yahata Viewpoint

Located in Kutchan Town, the Yahata Viewpoint provides an unobstructed view of Mt. Yotei, as well as the Niseko mountain range. Benches and tables are set up in this area too, allowing visitors to just take their time to admire the stunning view.

Local Spots

With Mt. Yotei towering over most of Niseko’s flatlands, you can see it almost everywhere you go. However, there are some spots that are a little more special than others.

Nokanosobaya Yoteizan
Nokanosobaya Yoteizan

Nokanosobaya Yoteizan in Kutchan is a popular local soba restaurant not only for its great soba dishes, but also because it is just adjacent to a famous Mt. Yotei photo spot. The spring water pond with Mt. Yotei in the back makes a great picture at any time of the day, especially during the golden hour. On an especially calm clear day, you can chance upon the reflection of Mt. Yotei on the water.

A local dairy ranch in Niseko is a great place to see Mt. Yotei because of the vast land it occupies. This is the perfect winter photo with a wide snow covered field in front and Mt. Yotei in the back completing the picture. By summer, a grassy meadow with cows roaming around the farm will welcome you.

Additionally, you should pass by the shops in the area where you can try delicious dairy treats including soft serve ice cream, cream puffs, drinking yogurt and cheese tarts.

Mr. Mishima’s Shibazakura Garden

A famous spot in Kutchan Town, locals and tourists alike visit this quaint little garden owned by Mr. Mishima in May and early June. Visitors are treated to a field of flowers in pink and white along with a gorgeous viewpoint of Mt. Yotei in the back.

This private garden is open to the public and admission is free. A free parking lot is also a walking distance away, making this local spot accessible.

If you’re a lover of literature and history, you’ll love this place in Niseko Town. A memorial hall celebrating the life and works of Taisho era novelist, Arishima Takeo, this museum is a great photo spot of Mt. Yotei. The museum also has an in-house cafe that gives you a great view of the mountain as well.

Niseko Ostrich Farm

Just a 10-minute drive away from the Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum, the Niseko Ostrich Farm is a great place to visit with the family. Not only is it a great spot to see Mt. Yotei, but you can also get up close with the ostriches roaming around the farm.

Fukidashi Park, Kyogoku

In a nearby town, Kyogoku, is home to the famous Fukidashi Park, known for the free flowing spring water that comes directly from Mt. Yotei. It is also a great photo spot of the mountain. Climb the stairs leading to the park’s observation deck and not only will you get a clear view of the mountain, but also an overlooking view of Kyogoku as well.

Soga Forest Park

The Soga Forest Park in Niseko Town is also a great place to see Mt. Yotei. Home to over 50 cherry blossom trees, a favourite local gathering spot in the summer, and mostly undisturbed in the winter – Soga Forest Park is an excellent Mt. Yotei photo spot throughout the whole year.

Mt. Annupuri

If you enjoy hiking or simply looking to get some steps in, try hiking up to the summit of Mt. Annupuri and you’ll get rewarded with a gorgeous view of Mt. Yotei that you wouldn’t see anywhere else. Rising to about 1,380 metres, Mt. Annupuri takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top.

For an especially photogenic view, go on an early morning hike and get a chance to witness Mt. Yotei peeking out of a sea of clouds during the sunrise hour.

Lawson Hirafu

If you’ve seen the viral photo going around of the 7-Eleven with Mt. Fuji in the background, Niseko actually has their own version of it as well. The Lawson in Hirafu, just right across Setsu Niseko, has become the subject of many photos as well with it being located just in front of Mt. Yotei – making it an iconic Niseko photo.
