Spring is a unique time to be in Niseko. With the season bringing warmer temperatures and bluebird days, the area starts its transition to the summer season while still receiving late-season snowfalls – making it possible to enjoy three seasons in Niseko all at once.
Skiing
While most of the ski crowd comes during the months of January and February to catch the world-famous powder snow, the months of March and April still provide favourable snow conditions, allowing ski resorts to stay open until early May.
Bluebird days, softer snow, and a quieter Niseko is what you’ll encounter during the spring skiing period. With shorter lift lines and less people on the slopes, this is the perfect time for beginners to learn or for advanced skiers to level up their skills because they have more space to play with on the mountain.
Other Winter Activities
This is also the perfect time to experience other winter activities while taking advantage of the good weather. Family-friendly activities like snowtubing, snowshoeing, and even snowmobiling are still available during the early spring months. Spring is also around the time the Hanazono Zipflight opens for a short period of time to let guests experience Niseko’s beautiful winter scenery while riding the zipline.
Summer Activities Open
Several summer activities in Niseko start in late April, including Hanazono’s Tree Trekking course which will open on 29 April. Spring rafting will also start on 4 April; the best time to experience rafting because of the rising water levels caused by snowmelt, creating water rapids that make up for an exciting and thrilling ride down the Shiribetsu river.
Golf courses will also resume their operations for the green season starting with Niseko Golf Course opening on 24 April and the Hanazono Golf Course on 2 May.
Cherry Blossoms
While there is still snow during the springtime, you’ll also notice the gradual return of nature as the days get warmer. And the classic sign that spring has finally arrived in Niseko is the blooming of the cherry blossom trees; creating a wonderful image of pink trees and snow-capped mountains in the area. Cherry blossoms in Niseko usually start blooming around late April to early May, much later than the rest of Hokkaido. If you will be in Niseko around this time, we recommend checking out the numerous cherry blossom spots in the area.
Explore by Bike or by Car
Springtime is the perfect time to explore more of Niseko and its surrounding towns since snow would have melted off the roads, making road conditions much safer. Discover the best photo spots of Mt. Yotei on a clear, sunny day; enjoy some of Hokkaido’s fresh spring produce by following a culinary food trail, or choose to enjoy one of the nearby towns with a day trip.
